SHOT Show 2015 . . . . Hard to describe if you have never been here

For those of you that have never been there, the SHOT Show is MASSIVE. It is held in the Sands convention center and uses 4 of that building 5 floors.

The Show is in 4 major display rooms I am posting a few pictures from the largest of those rooms.

Then there is a product showcase area

On top of this are 20 or 30 banquet sized rooms that are used for press releases and product announcements.

I have no way to measure it, but one of the show staff told me that the show takes up roughly the same space as
36 football fields (with endzones) 😮

Some Special Editions from Kimber

Kimber has started some limited editions. They are calling them Sapphire ….

The interesting thing is that the slides are finished in a PVD (DLC, Ion Bond, etc.) process that is extremely durable. In the case of the Sapphire line the the color is a bright blue that has a nice gloss to it. This finish is the same process that Smith and Wesson began using on the cylinders of the M&P revolvers several years ago. It has stood up very well.

These first two are 9MM 1911s.

Then there is the 9MM Solo Saphire

I realize that some of these photos might make you think of the rainbow titanium finish of a decade ago. This is a totally different process and much more durable.

There is a black version of this PVD finish that Kimber is calling Onyx. It is as pretty as the old Black Chrome used to be. As some of you recall black chrome was a poor choice for a firearm finish if the gun was to be used at all. At the moment the I believe the only Kimber Onyx is a distributor exclusive and I did not get a photograph of it.

With the durability of the PVD type finishes I think that we will see more firearms manufacturers going to this process. I think it is much better looking than the painted and backed on finishes that have become somewhat popular in recent years. It is certainly more durable than most of those baked finishes.

NEW 10MM Ammunition offerings in the recent years

When it comes to 10MM Auto ammunition you might recall that Federal introduced a 180 grain hunting load at a published velocity of 1275 FPS. I have some of this on the way for testing in various 10MM Auto pistols, revolvers and the MP5

Barnes is now loading their own ammunition. Their 10MM Auto offering is a 155 grain copper hollow point moving at less than 1200 FPS. This ammunition was announced last year as part of the VOR-TX line, but it never really got rolling until this year.

The folks at Barnes spent quite a bit of time with me on their ammunition. I have concerns that this loading might be on the light side. I have a few 10MM Auto firearms that need the higher end of the 10MM Auto performance curve for reliable functioning. I thought that the velocity needed to be increased a bit. The folks at Barnes will be sending a supply of this new ammunition so that it can be tested in a wider range of auto loading firearms to check their reliability.

Barnes and I also talked about getting a little more weight moving out of the barrel. The problem with copper hollow point projectiles is that they are significantly longer than traditional jacketed lead projectiles of he same weight. We know that there will never be a 190 or 200 grain copper hollow point loaded into the 10MM Auto cartridge. However I suspect they could get to 165 or even 170 grains.

As I mention in another posting SIG is releasing 2 10MM Auto loadings in 2015 for their new ammunition lineup. There will be a 180 Grain FMJ moving out at a published 1250 and a V-Crown 180 grain JHP loaded to the same velocity

4 NEW 10MM Auto loadings in the same year? 10MM Auto shooters should be in heaven with that much activity for a cartridge that has been declared dead more times than anyone can sount.

10MM SIG ? Yes the P220 is now offered in 10MM

10MM Auto is a favorite cartridge of mine. It has been for decades. The last few years have seen increased activity in this cambering. Manufacturers have introduced new pistols as well as ammunition offerings.

This year things exploded with SIG announcing 4 variations of the P220 pistol and two ammunition loadings. Most everyone on the Forum who is a 10MM Auto fan has already heard this.

SIG stoped participating at Media Day last year and began running their own range event at a different location. I did not attend both events so I have not shot the current factory SIG P220s yet.

The two offerings that were on display in SIGs booth are 5″ SAO pistols offered in stainless or Nitron.

I did not see SA/DA out at SIGs booth.

The 10MM Auto of the P220 Match Elite is a reverse two tone finish. I thought that I was not going to like it, but once it was in my hand I found that I like it.

The final version announced by SIG is the Hunt Ready P220. This has a SIG mini red dot already installed on the firearm. This will be a SAO version with G10 grips.

There is also at least one short run custom configuration available. Writer and on air personality Tom Gresham, host of Gun Talk, has a GT version that is limited to 1000 pistols. It is SAO in all stainless finish with Gun Talk logoed G10 grips.

SIG is adding two 10MM Auto loading to their line of Elite ammunition. Both offering contain 180 grain projectiles moving out at a published 1250 FPS. One will be a FMJ while the other is SIGs V-Crown Hollow Point. While not at the MAX end of the power range, it is certainly well above some of the watered down 10MM Auto factory loads we have been forced to live with over recent years.

Korth enter the US Concealed Carry market with a interesting piece

Interesting news from KORTH, the famous, super expensive German firearms company.

The company has introduce a compact 9MM revolver and the MSRP of the standard version will be under $1000

The firearm was designed from the ground up as a 9MM. The company has no compact 38 or 357 to make a variation from.

The frame is made from a lightweight alloy. It is roughly K-frame in size. It carries 6 rounds of 9MM ammunition and will handle all SAAMI standard pressure loads as well as SAAMI +P.

The cylinder is 99MM length and the extractor has little retractable legs that engage the 9MMs rill allowing the firearm to function correctly without any moon clip at all

The revolver has many sight and equipment options including standard rail mounted items.

Since the cylinder is K-frame in width, not only can you use the Korth speed loaders, but also the HKS 547 speed loaders that were made for the Smith and Wesson.

The grip frame will take any K/L size grips so options are plentiful

The trigger on the 3 that I handled were all light and crisp.

Overall, if this makes it to the street at the expected MSRP, I will be adding one to my collection for sure
