Browning BXP Personal Defense ammunition – Real World velocities

We all know that the real world does not always match the advertising claims when it comes to projectile velocities.

This past weekend I headed out to my buddy’s farm with the intent of chronographing 12 different 45ACP offerings through more than half a dozen firearms to see if the claims on the box matched the numbers across the skyscreens.

Like all good projects things started to go wrong. One of the two chronographs we brought along would not work correctly. So there went half of our testing. Then we had afternoon winds that picked up to the point the skyscreens were blowing around too much.

Bottom Line: I did not finish

I did get both of Browning’s new offerings fired through an HK USPt as well as it’s smaller brother the HK USP-CT.

I was really pleased with the numbers. Browning claims 920 FPS for both 230 grain offerings. Remember this is standard pressure ammunition, not +P.

When fired from the USPt and USP-CT the BPT 230 grain FMJ moved out at 855 FPS and 853 FPS respectively.

When fired from the USPt and USP-CT the BPX 230 grain XHP moved out at 910 FPS and 873 FPS respectively.

These are decent velocities for full weight 45 ACP projectiles. Somewhere down the road I will gather the data from a few other pistols (4516, Boberg, P220, USP Elite and S&W 25). I will also gather data for these same ammunition offerings when fired from guns equipped with a suppressor.

Browning’s 45ACP Personal Defense Ammunition

I know it has been out for some time now, however my small supple of Browning’s 230 grain 45ACP BXP ammunition just arrived this week. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

This is attractive ammunition. Nickel plated X-point HPs, pre-scored projectiles loaded into black nickel cartridge casings. Like most premium defense ammunition offered these days, the NEW BXP is packaged in 20 round boxes. OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

If this shoots as good as it looks it will be a winner. Initially I was going to shoot and chronograph this and other ammunition this weekend. Hurricane Matthew forced all of those plans to be canceled. Who know Matthew would be a dud

I will take this ammunition out in about five weeks and get velocities from some real world firearms.

We are only about 6 weeks away from Election day

Odds are 80%+ of us have already decided which candidate we are voting against. I phrase it that way because I do not feel that we have been given any candidates that are worthy of Voting for.
It does not matter if you are Conservative or Progressive, Left wing or Right wing GO OUT AND VOTE.
If you choose to stay home and not participate in the process, then do not complain about the result. Remember YOU did NOT want to participate.
If every person that used the old excuse “My Vote Does Not Matter” voted, there are enough of them to make a difference.
Half of us will be unhappy with the result no matter what, but remember the Office of President of the United States ALWAYS deserves respect, no matter who ends up sitting behind the Resolute Desk for the next four years.
I want everyone to re-read just the FIRST THREE WORDS of the US Constitution. Read it to your children as well. Schools no longer are teaching our children about the document.
“no words have said this thing of importance in quite this way. Look at these three words written larger than the rest, with a special pride never written before or since. Tall words proudly saying WE THE PEOPLE.” JTK

Our Founding Fathers left us a Legacy like the World had never seen. . . Do not let it fade into oblivion

September 11th

Only a few days from now will be the 15th Anniversary of the unprovoked Radical Islamic Terrorist Attack on our Great Nation that occurred on September 11th of 2001.

64065718

The lives of nearly 3000 people were snuffed out of existence that day. People that were only going about their normal business. Enormous damage was done to buildings and cities as well.

Please talk it over with your friends and neighbors. Tell you young children about what happened, We must never forget this event.

On Sunday please observe a moment of silence for the Victims of September 11th and remember the Heros of United 93 who brought down that fourth airliner before it had the chance to reach our Capitol.

356TSW

I know. I am a 45 guy and this is a 45 Blog so why is this post titled 356TSW?

Within the last several years I have become more involved in this almost dead rimless cartridge.

Smith and Wesson created the 356TSW in the early 1990s to help competition shooters. Unfortunately some rules changes in the various shooting sports nullified it’s advantages even before it had a chance to get out of the gate.

The cartridge is extremely similar to a 9MM Luger with the exception that the cartridge case is .35MM longer. The cartridge is also designed to operate at 50,000PSI as opposed to the 9MM Luger’s 35,000 PSI. This brings the performance into the 357 Magnum arena

Both cartridges are loaded to the same Cartridge Overall Length. This allows the 356TSW to be fired in 9MM sized platforms.  Unlike the bottlenecked 357SIG, magazine capacity is not reduced when using 356TSW.

Additionally, the initial firearms that Smith and Wesson released for this cartridge are very attractive (at least in my opinion)

The 3566 Limited was the full size offering. All stainless construction, 5″ barrel and 15+1 standard magazine capacity.

The 3566 Compact is the ONLY all stainless compact frame, double stack autoloader that the Smith and Wesson Performance Center has produced. The additional weight made the little pistol a pleasure to shoot.

There was even a 5 shot J-frame for concealed carry, the Performance Center 940 Special. However, this little revolver, nicknamed the Pocket Rocket, is a handful to shoot.

So few folks know that this era in Smith and Wesson firearms even existed I really want to get the word out.

Additionally, when I was first researching the cartridge I only found bits and pieces of information scattered around the web. So I created www.356TSW.Com. It is my hope that those of use still using, loading and experimenting with the fine cartridge can consolidate out information, thoughts and dreams in a single location.

Perhaps the 356TSW will live on.

So please visit www.356TSW.Com and look around if you find this interesting. Contribute if you want but enjoy it even if you are not going down the 356TSW path
