July 20th……An Extrodinary day n History

Through pretty much all of history Mankind has been an Explorer. We have always wondered “What was over that hill?” or “Who are those strange people?”

We are on the Anniversary Eve on one of the greatest accomplishments of Exploration in Mankind’s history. 45 years ago on July 20th, man landed on a Celestial body that was not our own.

At 9:56 PM Eastern time on that July 20th Evening, the late Neil Armstrong stepped off the last rung of the “Eagle’s” ladder and changed everything. Those first 11 words spoken from the surface of another planet should ring in our ears for eternity…….”That’s one small step for [a] man, one giant leap for mankind.”

As natural Explorers. Mankind’s desire to reach the heavens has probably been with us through all of history. It was not until December of 1903 when two brothers at Kitty Hawk flew for the first time. All of the sudden, the heavens were closer.

Gene Cernan, the last man to set foot on the moon, gives a great speech where he points out the truly remarkable achievement of getting from our first glider flight in Kitty Hawk to the surface of the moon and back in only 66 years. But what has happened in the 45 years since then?

Why has man gone no further? What happened to our desire to explore? Why have we not explored strange new worlds or gone to seek out new life and new civilizations? Where is Stanley Kubrick’s space station and Moon base?

What is worse than not going anywhere and not doing anything, is that we have forgotten what we accomplished. Talk to any high-school aged person about landing on the moon and they know nothing of it.

This July 20th, talk to your kids, your friends, your neighbors or anyone that will listen to you and let us all remember together what those few brave men did when they ventured away from Earth. It is an accomplishment too exceptional to be forgotten.

While we are at it, let us figure out a way to rekindle that spark of Exploration that took Mankind from the Earth to the Moon

Memorial Day

memorial-day-2014-pictures

Memorial Day is not a day off school
Memorial Day is not a day with no mail
Memorial Day is not a day that BBQ

Memorial Day is the day that we honor all of those souls that made America FREE

Going all the way back to April 19th 1775 when a small group of Farmers and Colonists were called upon to defend the North Bridge against a force of professionally trained and armed British soldiers more than twice their number. By the end of the day the weapons in the Armory at Concord were secured, British troops were sent scurrying back to Boston and the Revolutionary war had begun.

The bravery of these untrained common citizens against such formidable odds is the kind of stuff that makes America GREAT.

Say a prayer, pause for a moment of silence or even just raise a glass in honor of those Minutemen in 1775 and all the Brave men and women that answered the call when America needed them the most over the past 239 years.

America must Never forget what makes her the Greatest Nation on Earth

45 Colt Shopkeeper

Colt’s Shopkeeper was an interesting single action revolver produced by the Colt Custom Shop from 2008-2009. With no ejector rod and a 4″ barrel it was just a bit larger than the Colt Sheriff model

Here are a couple of photos and a video for your enjoyment.

Smith and Wesson’s little talked about Model 845

We have two of these in my family. One from each of the runs.

For those that do not know, the 845 was an experimental target version of the 745 designed back in the mid 1980s but never produced.

A relative of mine has the older model, The 845 Limited, product code 170064. These were produced in 1995-97. I have no idea how many Lew Horton had manufactured. The one pictured is his second and was recently acquired for him.

One of this original run was the first 845 I had ever fired. This is what I had been wanting for years, a 45ACP successor to the model 52. This pistols shoots like a dream and I began a search for one of my own.

Eventually I came upon an 845 Model of 1998, product code 170097. Roughly 150 of these were produced. I grabbed it. It shoots just as well and adds front cocking serrations for those that like them.

Both of these are exceptional pistols. If you are a model 52 shooter, you will love the 845. It is what the 952 should have been in feel and performance. Though I admit the 952 is pretty

The frame and slide of the 845s are hand lapped to each other. The titanium nitrite coated spherical bushing that surrounds the match grade barrel not only makes racking the slide butter smooth, it also contributes to the one hole accuracy of the pistol. I have always liked the picture provided by the Bomar rear sight. In fact my old model 52 is fitted with a Bomar rib. These use the same magazines as the 645/745/4506 family of auto-loaders so mags are never going to be an issue like they are today with the model 52s.

Here are the two 845 pistols together

I am certain that we have other 845 owners and shooters out there. Perhaps they can also chime in on what I think is one of, If not the most understated and unknown Target pistols that Smith and Wesson has produced in the last several decades.
