Reintroduction of the Colt Cobra

Another one of the pre-SHOT Show stories was Colt’s return to the revolver market with the NEW Colt Cobra

While it is called a Cobra this is not developed from the old alloy framed Cobra of yesteryear.

After the discontinuance of the Detective Special, Colt released a revolver called the SF-IV. Shortly thereafter the SF-IV was renamed the DS-II. The new name gave the revolver much better market recognition and sales.

The Cobra was developed out of where this development path left off. Like the DS-II the new Cobra is chambered for 38 Special and rated at +P levels. The ammunition on hand was the Colt branded ammunition that is being manufactured by DoubleTap. It is definitely at the bleeding edge of the pressure and performance limits of the cartridge

I handled three of the new Cobras and shot two of them. Both the single and double action pull on these revolvers was fantastic. Accuracy was great. I was tapping the 25 yard gongs with little trouble.

The only downside is the finish. They actually look better in these photographs than in person. It is of low quality, much like the last run of 38 special Colt Agents or the Colt 1991s. Since the construction is stainless, it would not cost too much to do a mid level final polish. That would really round out what many of us expect from a revolver with this kind of heritage

New Kimber Revolvers ?

Prior to the SHOT Show there were rumors that Kimber was releasing some NEW revolvers

Well this is sort of true and sort of not

All the new releases are variations on the K6

The first one is a three dot sight system with a red Fiber Optic front sight

The second one is pretty much the original model with a matte finish and rubber grips. The rear sight has been redesigned and soon a Tritium sight version will be offered

The third one is equipped with Crimson Trace laser grips and also sports the new taller sights

Sorry for the blue cast on the pictures, we were under a blue canopy tent. I will shoot some more inside the Sands Expo Center

While I shot the K6 last year, those were pre production revovlers. I am pleased to say that the actions on these production guns is just as good.

I did express a concern that the MSRP of these revolvers was a bit on the high side, unfortunately the range staff are the wrong people to be talking to about this issue

The Passing of a Legend

This week America has been diminished. One of our modern Pioneers has passed away. A breed of Man that has been getting harder to find as time progresses. A Hero to Millions and Millions of Americans

Those tasks that he undertook as a young man are the things that dreams are made of.

As a Senator he even convinced NASA to let go him back up. I was thrilled to be at KSC for both the launch and landing of STS-95 as one of his guests.

A look back at the Taurus 450t

Throwback Thursday?

I know it has been out of the catalog for years, but Taurus made some great mid sized snubbies back in the day.

Offered in 2″ or 2 1/2″ barrels depending on the caliber and constructed of Stainless, Alloy or Total Titanium, these were little powerhouses. The revolvers were offered in a seven shot 357 Magnum or 5 shot 41 Magnum, 44 Special, 45 ACP and 45 Long Colt.

Shown below is the 2″ Total Titanium, 45 Long Colt, Taurus Model 450t snub nose revolver.

This Little Big Bore weighs in at under 20 ounces. To help tame recoil, the revolver is ported, this in addition what Taurus calls their “Ribber” grips do make a big difference.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAI find the revolver pleasant enough to shoot most all 45 Long Colt ammunition that conforms to SAAMI specifications. Obviously this is not a revolver that you use to go out an plink a few hundred rounds on a lazy Sunday afternoon. This is a “I am in the wrong place and I need to save my ***” revolver.

Loaded with Barnes’ NEW 200 grain total Copper HPs, I think that goal is well met.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERAThat view is just a little bit on the intimidating side.

It is not necessary to always be looking to the latest and greatest thing the Magazines or Internet are harping on, nor do you need to seek out what the Boys and Girls on the new COP show are carrying. A 15+ year old revolver design stuffed with a 140+ year old cartridge will fill the bill just fine . . . . After all it is a 45
